Gilmore Knocks A Grand-Slam, Cox Sends Two Over The Fence In A Doubleheader Against Lewis & Clark
PORTLAND, OR- Senior Brian Gilmore knocked a grand-slam while teammate John Cox hit a pair of homeruns in Willamette’s doubleheader against Lewis & Clark Wednesday afternoon. The Bearcats took the first game with a score of 20-6 and 16-4 for the second.
Willamette improves to an overall record of 14-16 and 10-10 in the Northwest Conference. The Pioneers lower their record to 8-19-1 overall and 0-16 NWC.
The teams began the afternoon finishing off a suspended game that began on March 16.
The Bearcats took their 12-6 lead in the eighth inning and turned it into a 20-6 victory, scoring six runs in the eighth and two in the ninth. Cox (pictured above), senior first baseman for Willamette, went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and eight RBI. Cox had a homerun, a double, and a pair of singles.
Shortstop Matt Rasmussen had two hits of five at bats, bringing in two RBI and scoring three runs. Steve Johnson, third baseman for the Bearcats, went 3-for-4, with one RBI and three runs scored.
Drew Herbert picked up his third win for the Bearcats. Willamette allowed only six hits for the game.
In the second game the Pioneers held the Bearcats to a 7-2 game, with three hitless innings, until Willamette scored nine runs on three hits in the eighth making it 16-2.
Gilmore, senior left fielder for the Bearcats, had a grand-slam as part of the nine run inning. Cox hit his second homerun of the series and fifth homerun of the season.
Cox went 2-for-3, with two RBI and three runs scored. Johnson brought in two runs with his two hits and scored two runs.
For the Pioneers, freshman Chris Estrella hit his third homerun for the season. Estrella hit 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
Senior Jeff Ross recorded the win for the Bearcats. Ross allowed only two hits out of 14 batters faced.
Willamette hosts Whitman College this Saturday and Sunday with games starting at noon.
