Halpin's RBI Double Lifts Bearcats to Extra Inning Win Over Menlo
Orange CA — Ken Halpin’s RBI double with one out in the bottom of the 11th capped a come-from-behind victory for Willamette (18-17) over Menlo, 5-4, in the opening game of the Chapman Invitational at Hart Park on Friday afternoon.
The Bearcats rallied from a 4-1 deficit to score a run in the eighth, then two in the ninth to tie the game to force extra-innings.
Halpin’s double in the 11th drove in Dane Woldseth, who reached on one of 11 Menlo walks. Sean Anderson drew a walk to push Woldseth to second before Halpin ended the game with his second hit of the game.
One of Willamette’s two runs in the ninth came courtesy of another Halpin base-hit, this one driving in Adam Holden, who had reached on a walk and moved to third on Woldseth’s single. Halpin’s hit came after Anderson walked to load the bases. The tying run scored on Matt Johnson’s double-play grounder.
Clint Moran got the win with 5.1 innings of scoreless relief. Jeff Ross stated and gave up two runs in three innings. Clint Murrell pitched 2.2 innings and allowed one earned run.
Halpin finished 2-6 with two RBI. Woldeseth was 1-3 with two runs scored. John Cox was 2-4 with a run scored, Brian Gilmore and Steve Johnson also had RBIs.
The Bearcats face host Chapman Saturday, a 9-1 winner over Cal State East Bay.
