Pirates Take Two From Willamette
SPOKANE, WA- The Whitworth Pirates took two games away from the Willamette University softball team Saturday afternoon, with scores of 2-0 and 4-0.
The Pirates improve to an overall record of 18-13 and 13-7 in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats fall to 18-8 overall, 16-4 NWC.
In the first game Whitworth jumped on the board when a double by left fielder Andraya Robertson scored lead-off hitter Patti Stranger.
The two teams played solid defense, holding each other for four scoreless innings until Robertson sent one over the fence in the bottom of the sixth giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
Robertson went 3-for-3 with a homerun, two doubles, two RBI and one run scored.
Molly Barnes, of Willamette, had two hits of three at bats.
Junior pitcher Jo Sonnett recorded her eighth win for Whitworth.
The hitless innings continued into the second game, with both teams allowing only three hits going into the top of the fourth inning.
The Pirates brought in two runs in the bottom of the fourth when a single by shortstop Kristin Hanson brought in Amy Mattie and Heather Case.
Whitworth added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when a Nicole Cavalier single scored third baseman Laura Romag. Stranger (2-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB) hit a double to bring in Cavalier.
Cavalier went 2-for-3, with one RBI and one run scored.
For Willamette, catcher Cari Schruth went 3-for-3 with one walk and one stolen base. Freshman Kelsey Stolz had a double.
Whitworth pitcher Alana Klaus picked up the win, improving her record to 8-2.
The teams meet Sunday for another doubleheader with games starting at noon.
