PLU Hangs On to Defeat Bearcat Women for Third Place in NWC Championships
YAKIMA, WA — Seedings held true to form as No. 3 Pacific Lutheran defeated the No. 4 Willamette University women’s tennis team, 5-4, for third place in the Northwest Conference tennis championships held Saturday in Yakima.
After Alaine Anderson and Ashley Layton gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead at No. 1 doubles, PLU swept through the remaining doubles matches, then won the first three singles matches to take third place in the NWC. The Bearcats finished fourth.
At No. 2 doubles, Susan Butler and Hannah Johnson lost in a tie-breaker, 8-8 (7-4), and the Lutes pulled away from there. Buter also lost a 3-set match at No. 1 singles, falling 7-5 in the third set to Megan Proffitt.
Hannah Johnson, Tiffany Kam and Ashley Layton won the final three singles matches, all in two set matches.
