Shannon McGrane Leads After First Day Of Northwest Conference Multi-Event Championships
TACOMA, WA- Willamette University’s Shannon McGrane and KC Gillespie are two of the top competitors following the first day at the Northwest Conference Multi-Event Championships, held at Pacific Lutheran University.
McGrane scored 2,576 points in the first four events of the heptathlon—the 100 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 meter dash. She leads second place Michelle Forbes of George Fox University by six points.
Gillespie is in second place, behind Ben Dillow of George Fox, after scoring 3,322 points in the first five decathlon events — the 100 meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400 meter dash. Dillow, the runner-up at last year’s NWC Multi-Event Championships, scored 3,384 points.
Bearcats Jordyn Smith and Roseann Kassebaum earned 2,273 and 2,229 points, good for fifth and sixth place.
For the men, Mark Rice holds fourth place with 2,982 points.
The athletes battled adverse weather conditions, which included brisk winds and two rain and hail storms during yesterday's events.
The meet concludes today with events starting at 9 a.m. The heptathlon events for today consist of the long jump, triple jump and 800 meter run. The decathlon events are the 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meter run.
