Softball Picks Up Two Wins To Tie As Conference Leaders
SALEM, OR- The Willamette University softball team picked up two wins this afternoon against George Fox University, giving them the tie with Linfield College as Northwest Conference leaders.
The Bearcats came back late in the first game with a 2-1 win
over the Bruins. Willamette held off George Fox in
the second for a 5-3 victory.
The Bearcats improved to a 15-5 overall and 13-1 NWC record. The Bruins lowered to 6-21 overall and 1-15 NWC.
With Willamette leading the second game 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth the Bruins desperately tried to fight back with two RBI singles from center fielder Cassie Halvorson and shortstop Kerstyn Tsuruda.
But the Bearcats powered down with a throw from sophomore catcher Cari Schruth to get the runner out on an attempted steal to second. The Bearcats ended the inning with a ground ball to second baseman Marianne Ward.
For Willamette, Schruth went 1-1 with two runs, two walks, and two stolen bases. Center fielder Kelsey Stolz had two hits out of three at bats with a stolen base.
Tsuruda, of the Bruins, went 2-2 with one RBI, one walk, and one HBP. First baseman Hollee Braun hit a double and walked once.
Junior Laura Milne picked up her seventh win for the Bearcats. Brittany Dearing recorded her ninth save, her eighth came in the first game.
In the first game George Fox jumped out early with 1-0 lead in the top of the second. The Bearcats finally broke through the defense to get runners on in the bottom of the fifth, using a few errors to their advantage and scoring two runs to take the game winning lead.
Stolz had two hits out of two at bats and one walk for Willamette. Schruth went 1-3 with two RBI. Shortstop Liz Gilgan went 1-2 with one run, and one stolen base.
