Symmonds' 1500M Race Gets Him Athlete Of The Week
SALEM, OR- The Northwest Conference honors sophomore Nick Symmonds as the NWC Men’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week after his qualifying race at the Willamette Invitational last weekend.
Symmonds, a native of Boise, Idaho, raced for an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 3:47.04 in the 1500 meters.
Symmonds, a three-time National Champion in the 1500 and 800 meters, finished Saturday’s race six seconds ahead of his closest competiton.
NWC Honorable Mentions goes out to track & field’s Ashley Sharratt and softball players Lindsey Braun and Brittany Dearing.
Sharratt, a freshman from Union, OR, won the 3000 meter steeplechase at the Bearcats’ Invitational with a time of 12:13.51.
Braun, a senior from Salem, OR, drove in the winning run in Willamette’s come-from-behind win over Pacific Saturday. Braun went 2-3 in the two games with two walks, four RBI and a pair of doubles.
Dearing, a junior right handed pitcher from Orangevale, CA, set a Willamette team record as she recorded her seventh save of the season, combing with Laura Milne to allow only one hit for the game. Dearing helped the Bearcats to a 4-0 win over Pacific.
