Symmonds Shines at Willamette Invitational
SALEM, OR — Nick Symmonds posted an automatic qualifying time for the national championships in the 1500 meter run, leading a handful of Bearcats to individual wins at the Willamette University Invitational track meet Friday and Saturday at McCulloch Stadium.
Over 1000 competitors were on hand for the event.
Along with Symmonds (pictured left), Shannon McGrane, Ashley Sharratt, Nate Matlock and the women's 4 x 400 relay team also posted victories on Saturday.
Symmonds, a three-time national champion in the 1500 and 800 meters, blew away the competition in the 1500, winnings in a time of 3:47.04. He was six seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.
Nate Matlock won the shot-put with a heave on 50’51/2”, edging out Carlos Aguilar of Western Oregon by one inch. Matlock also finished second in the hammer throw.
Ashley Sharrat won the 3000M steeplechase, finishing in 12:13.51.
McGrane continued her domination in the 400-meter hurdles, winning in a time of 1:02.78. Jordyn Smith finished second.
McGrane, Smith, Carly Killam and Alicia Andrews teamed to win the women’s 4 x 400 meter relay in a time of 3:53.99.
