Willamette Football Prepares For Tough 2005 Schedule

SALEM, OR — The Willamette University football team will host the two teams that vied for the national championship in Division III last season as the Bearcats play DIII runner-up University of Mary Hardin Baylor in their home opener on September 11 and conclude the regular season against national champion Linfield College, according to the schedule released this week by Head Coach Mark Speckman (pictured left).

The Bearcats will once again play one of the toughest schedules in the country in 2005, counting a Division II and two NAIA opponents among the team’s ten games. Last season, the Bearcats finished 7-4, losing to Occidental College in the first round of the DIII national championships. It was the Bearcats’ first post-season appearance since 1999.

The Bearcats open the season at Western Oregon on September 3rd. Along with home contests against UMHB and Linfield, the Bearcats will host Menlo College, Southern Oregon University, and Pacific University.

Three of the Bearcats’ five conference games are on the road. The Bearcats
will also travel to California to play Azusa Pacific on September 17th.
