UPDATE: Symmonds Doubles Up in 800; McGrane and Andrews Get Seconds
WAVERLY, IA — With a handful of events left, the Willamette University men sit fourth and the women 10th on the final day of the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships. Nick Symmonds has repeated as 800m champ, winning his fifth NCAA championship and second of the afternoon.
Shannon McGrane finished second and Jordym Smith fifth in the 400 hurdles. McGrane’s time of 61:30 was just a tenth of a second behind the winner. Smith ran a 62.74 to earn All-American honors as a freshmen.
Alicia Andrews finished second in the 800m. The senior ran 2:12.62, finishing a little more than a second out of first place.
Symmonds set a second stadium record of the day when he raced to a 1:49.87 victory, nearly two seconds ahead of the field.
The Bearcat men are fourth with 43 points and only Aaron Hollingshead left to compete in the 5K run.
The women’s 4 x 400 relay team of McGrane, Smith, Andrews and Andrea May will race in the final event later this afternoon as the Bearcats look to improve on their 23 points.
