Bearcats Break Losing Skid With 1-0 Win Over George Fox
NEWBERG, Ore. — Trevor Jones scored his second game-winning goal of the season as the Willamette University Bearcats won their first Northwest Conference game of the season with a 1-0 win over George Fox at Morse Field.
The Bearcats scored the only goal of the game on their first shot attempt 10 minutes into the action. Ryan Powers’ throw-in from the left corner went to the middle, where Jones deflected the loose ball into the net at the 10:13 mark. It was his second score of the season.
The George Fox defense limited Willamette to 10 more shots, and only 3 more on goal, the rest of the game. Meanwhile, the Bruins were getting 15 shots, 8 on goal, but one was deflected by a defender and keeper Dane Meier made 7 saves. The Bruins’ best shot at tying came around the 59-minute mark when Erich Hangartner’s corner kick into the middle gave the Bruins four shots in rapid succession. Joshua Smith’s shot hit the post, Jon Johnson’s rebound try was blocked by a Willamette defender, Meier saved Hangartner’s liner, and Dan Potter sent the ball just over the top of the net.
George Fox, with its 6th straight setback, fell to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the conference. Willamette snapped its own 5-game losing streak, climbing to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the league.
Both teams are on the road Saturday for 2:30 p.m. conference games, the Bruins going to Forest Grove to play Pacific University and the Bearcats in McMinnville to take on Linfield College.
