Bearcats Fall to Wheaton, 3-2, in Season Opener
WHEATON, IL — Sarah Richardson scored early in the second overtime, leading Wheaton to a 3-2 victory over the Willamette University women’s soccer team in the season opener for both teams at the Bob Bob Baptista Invitiational Friday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, junior Jessica Lammers scored the game’s first goal, converting a pass from senior Brenna Hindman just over two minutes into the second half.
Wheaton’s Jenn Binger tied the game before freshman Emily Gross got her first collegiate goal, spinning past a defender to score on with her left foot in the 71st minute, to give the Bearcats a short-lived 2-1 lead.
Richardson tied the game ten minutes later. The teams played a scoreless first overtime before Richardson converted a pass from Colleen McAndrew for the game-winner.
Wheaton out-shot the Bearcats 31-11 in the game, including 28 shots on goal in the first half. Goalie Kari Woody had 11 saves in the contest.
The Bearcats play again Saturday against Depauw, the 17th ranked team in the country. Game-time is 10 a.m.
Sunday night, Willamette christens its new artificial surface and new lights with a 7 p.m. game against the College of St. Benedict at Sparks Field.
