Butler, Gregoire Tally First Half Goals to Lead Willamette to Win Over Pioneers
SALEM, OR — Juniors Susan Butler and Michelle Gregoire scored less than a minute and a half apart in the first half as the Willamette University women’s soccer team beat the Lewis and Clark Pioneers 2-0 in a Northwest Conference game Thursday night at Sparks Field.
The win raises the Bearcat’s record to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the NWC. The Pioneers fall to 1-4-1 overall, 0-3 NWC.
Butler (pictured left) tallied on an unassisted goal in the 24th minute when her shot from the wing went through the hands of Pioneer goalie Nora Germano.
Gregoire’s goal came in the 25th minute when freshman defender Jennifer Standifer struck a perfect cross that Gregoire booted home from in front of the net.
Willamette out-shot the Pioneers 13-9 and won the battle of corner kicks 4-0. The game was physical throughout with a total of 39 fouls called on both teams.
Bearcat goalie Kari Woody had five saves in the shutout win. Germano also recorded five saves.
The Bearcats travel to Tacoma Saturday for an NWC game against nationally ranked University of Puget Sound.
