Carlson's Second Half Goal Leads Whitworth Over Willamette, 1-0
SALEM, OR — Jonathan Carlson scored eight minutes into the second half as the No. 14 Whitworth Pirates defeated the Willamette University men’s soccer team 1-0 in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Sparks Field.
Bearcat goalie Dane Meier had 12 saves and the Pirates launched 34 shots, but only Carlson’s goal found the back of the net. Ali Seyadali and Todd Sabrowski both had assists on Carlson’s goal.
While the Bearcats managed only five shots in the game, their defense held the Pirates in check for most of the afternoon. Pirate goalie Kevin Bostock had two saves in the shut out.
Whitworth is now 4-1 overall, 1-0 in NWC play. The Bearcats fall to 2-4, 0-1 NWC.
Both teams return to action Sunday as the Bearcats host Whitman at 2:30 at Sparks Field and the Pirates take on George Fox.
