Freshmen Duo Leads Willamette Women's Golf To First Round Lead in South Four-Way Tourney
McMinnville, OR. — Freshman Whitney Ueno shot a 4-over par 76 to win medalist honors and lead the Willamette University women’s golf team to a 20-shot lead in the first round of the South 4-way Tournament at Michelbrook Country Club on Monday.
Ueno of Hilo, Hawaii was followed by her freshmen teammate May Ushikubo (FR, West Vancounver, BC) who shot an 80 for the day. The Bearcat freshmen beat last year’s NWC champion Leslie Wheeler of Linfield who finished Monday with an 81.
The unique format for this event has four rounds, played on four different courses, over several weeks. Round 2 of the Four-Way South tournament will be played Sunday, September 18, at Quail Valley in Banks Oregon.
The addition of the two dynamic freshmen golfers has changed the landscape of Willamette golf this season.
“ This is the best golf Willamette women have played in my four years of coaching here,” Head coach Tom Hibbard said, “As freshmen [Ueno and Ushikubo] they beat out the conference champion [Wheeler] on her own course, and that is impressive.”
