Meier Named NWC Defensive Player of the Week

SALEM, OR — The Willamette University men's soccer team posted two shutouts to open the season, earning senior goalie Dane Meier Northwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Meier (SR, Reno, NV) notched ten saves in two games as the Bearcats beat Cal State East Bay 1-0 in OT and Augsburg, 2-0. The Bearcats went on to lose to UC Santa Cruz on Monday and are now 2-1 on the season.

Trevor Jones earned honorable mention Player of the Week for his game-winning overtime goal in the Bearcats’ opening day win.

Roni Schneider was credited with 43 digs in the Bearcats four-game match against CSEB. That figure ranks ninth all-time in Division III for four-game matches and earned Schneider honorable mention POTW honors.

Also earning honorable mentions were women soccer players Laura Uhlmansiek (two goals and 2 assists in the Bearcats 5-0 win over College of St. Benedict) and goalie Kari Woody (19 saves in three games).

The Bearcat soccer teams face Corban College (formerly Western Baptist College) at Corban on Saturday. The men play at 2 p.m. The women kick-off at 7 p.m.
