Butler Scores Game-Winner Again As Bearcats Sweep Western Washington Road Trip
SPOKANE, WA — Susan Butler scored just 1:38 into the game as the Willamette University women’s soccer team avenged an earlier loss to the Whitworth Pirates with a 1-0 road win in a Northwest Conference game Sunday afternoon.
Butler (pictured left) drive home a pass from freshman forward Emily Gross for the game’s only goal as the Bearcats raised their season record to 9-4-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the NWC. Whitworth falls to 5-5-3, 4-4-2 NWC.
The Bearcats remain tied with Pacific Lutheran for the second spot in conference. The University of Puget Sound leads the NWC with a 9-0-1 NWC record.
While managing only six shots in the game, the Bearcat defense held Whitworth to only 11 shots, three on goal. Junior keeper Kari Woody went the distance for the Bearcats in goal. Defenders Kelsey Rogel, April Kyrkos, Sam Post and Jennifer Standifer combined for willamette’s fourth shutout in its last six games.
The Bearcats play at Lewis & Clark next Saturday before retuning home to host league-leading UPS on Sunday.
