Gross Goal Gives Bearcats 1-0 Win Over Linfield
MCMINNVILLE, OR — Emily Gross scored midway thorugh the first half and the Bearcat’s improving defense made it stand up as the Willamette University women's soccer team beat Linfield 1-0 in a Northwest Conference game Saturday.
The Bearcats are now 6-4 on the season and 4-2 in the NWC. Linfield falls to 2-5-2 overall, 1-4-1 NWC.
Gross, an early substitution at forward, took a one-touch pass from Brenna Hindman before hitting home a shot from the top of the box in the 23rd minute. It was one of only six Bearcats shots in the game while Linfield managed 15.
Goalie Kari Woody returned after a one-game absence due to injury to post the shutout with eight saves. Defenders Kelsey Rogel, Sam Post, Jennifer Standifer and April Kyrkos helped hold Linfield offense scoreless and record the defense's second straight shutout.
The Bearcats don't play again until next Saturday when they host Pacific Lutheran at noon before embarking on a four-game road trip beginning at Pacific on October 9th.
