Willamette, Linfield Battle to 1-1 Tie

SALEM, OR — A goal for each team in the first nine minutes was all the scoring as the Willamette University women’s soccer team and Linfield College battled to a 1-1 tie in two overtimes Sunday afternoon at Sparks Field.

The tie leaves Willamette with a 10-6-2 overall record, 8-4-2 in the Northwest Conference. Linfield is 5-8-4 overall and 3-8-3 NWC.

Linfield’s Ashley Covey scored in the 5th minute when she converted a pass from Heidi Wood for a 1-0 Linfield lead. The Bearcats came back three minutes later when Kelsey Priest (pictured left) fired home a loose ball in front of the goal for a 1-1 tie.

The Bearcats out-shot Linfield 19-11 for the game. Both goalies — Kari Woody for Willamette and Allison Cartmill for Linfield — recorded five saves in the game

The Bearcats play their final home game Friday morning at 11 a.m. against Pacific before traveling to PLU Saturday for a game that may decide second place in conference and a possible trip to the NCAA tournament.
