Bearcats Beat Occidental 69-58 Behind 15 from Jennifer Bell
Los Angeles, CA — Jennifer Bell led three Bearcats in double figures with 15 and sparked a second half rally as the Willamette University women’s basketball team came from five points down to defeat Occidental College, 69-58, in a non-conference game Tuesday night.
Laura Payne has 13 points, four boards and three assists. Tracie Nygaard chipped in with ten points and six rebounds. Bell had four rebounds to go along with three assists.
The Bearcats took a 36-35 lead into halftime, but fell behind by five, 44-39 with 13:45 to play. A Bell 3-pointer and a hoop from Maggie Wilkens tied it at 44 before an old-fashioned 3-point play by Brittany Farrer gave the Bearcats a 47-44 edge.
Wilkens hit again for a three-point lead before Laura Payne got three more the hard way to push the Bearcat lead to six. Willamette kept that lead for the rest of the game. A Sara Brooks 3-pointer put Willamette up 63-54. Bell was 3-4 from the line down the stripe and Brooks added two more from the foul line for the final margin.
Brooks had a season-high eight assists as the Bearcats shot 41% from the floor. Caitlin Andrus had nine points and six boards. Farrer finished with eight and five. Wilkens scored six points and grabbed three boards in nine minutes of play.
The Bearcats are now 3-5 overall and play Whittier College Wednesday at 3 p.m.
