Bearcats Tie PLU 0-0; Finish Second in NWC And May Still Get NCAA Tournament Invitiation
TACOMA, WA — The Willamette University women’s soccer team tied Pacific Lutheran University 0-0 (2OT) to capture second place in the Northwest Conference.
While stats and details were unavailable, Coach Jim Tursi said the Bearcats had a few more scoring chances, but both teams played solid defense in a hard rain. The two teams tied both times they played this fall, but the Bearcats win the battle for second place by a half-game.
Willamette closes out its season at 11-6-3 overall, 9-4-3 NWC. PLU ends at 11-6-2 overall, 9-5-2 NWC.
The selection for this year’s expanded NCAA Division III National Championship soccer tournament will take place on Sunday. Twelve teams have been added to the field, meaning that the Bearcats may still get a bid because of the second place finish in the tough NWC. It is expected that at least six team from the West will be taken.
The University of Puget Sound won the women’s title. UPS finished second in the nation a year ago and is currently ranked No. 8. Redlands, Pomona-Pitzer and UC Santa Cruz are all ranked in the top 25.
Tursi said the selection may well last deep into the night and results may not be known until Monday morning. Updates will be posted as soon as available.
