Hodder, Rodrigues Lead Bearcats Past Pacific, 2-0
SALEM, OR — Sam Hodder scored his first collegiate goal for the game-winner, and Mike Rodrigues added an insurance score, as the Willamette University men’s soccer team defeated the Pacific Boxers, 2-0, in a Northwest Conference game Friday afternoon at Sparks Field.
Hodder (pictured left), a second half substitution for Coach Jeff Enquist, took a cross from Ryan Powers and put it past Pacific goalie Jory Shene in the 67th minute to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.
Rodrigues scored late in the second half, breaking away from the Pacific defense and driving a low shot past Shene into the left corner for a 2-0 Bearcat lead.
Senior goalie Dane Meier, playing in his last home game, recorded four saves for the shutout victory. Also playing in their final home game for the Bearcat men were forward Donald Bressler and midfielder Daniel Park.
The victory gives the Bearcats a record of 5-12 overall, 3-10 NWC. Pacific falls to 2-14-1 overall, 1-11-1 NWC.
Willamette out-shot Pacific 19-5, including 11-0 in the first half. But Shene turned away several shots and it wasn’t until mid-way through the second half that the Bearcats broke through. Shene finished with seven saves for Pacific.
Willamette ends its season Saturday night against PLU in Tacoma.
