Nygaard, Farrer and Brooks Lead Bearcats to First Win of Season
PORTLAND, OR — Tracie Nygaard sparked a 10-0 first half run with six of her 11 points and Brittany Farrer had a game-high 16 as the Willamette University women’s basketball team won the first game of the Bruce Henderson era with a 58-43 win over Smith College Saturday night at the Bon Appetit Classic.
Sara Brooks scored ten points, grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and added four assists. Nygaard and Farrer each had four rebounds. Jennifer Bell had nine points for Willamette. Laura Payne and Caitlin Andrus each chipped in with four. Andrus also had five rebounds.
With a 20-19 lead at the 7-minute mark, Victoria Swigart stared the run with a jumper. Nygaard and Swigart each added lay-ups before Nygaard nailed four straight free throws to put the Bearcats ahead 30-19. When Sara Brooks dropped home a jump shot with six seconds left in the first half, the Bearcats took a 32-21 lead into halftime.
Farrer scored nine of her 16 in the second half as the Bearcats stretched the lead to 16 points and never looked back.
The Bearcats are now 1-1 on the season. Smith falls to 0-2.
Willamette shot 38% for the game, despite hitting only 3-15 from beyond the arc. Willamette won the battle of the boards 39-38.
The Bearcats host Corban College Tuesday night at the Cone Field House in another non-conference game. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
