Whitman Defeats Willamette in Three
SALEM, OR — The Whitman Missionaries ended the Willamette University volleyball team’s season with a three-game sweep in a Northwest Conference match at the Cone Field House Saturday night.
Whitman won the match 30-28, 30-27 and 30-21 as they raised their season record to 12-12 overall and 7-9 in the NWC. Rosa Brey led Whitman with 10 kills and five blocks.
Willamette was led by eleven kills from Jessica Durham and 27 digs from senior Roni Schneider. Schneider ended her senior season as the NWC leader in digs and ranks in the top 20 in the nation.
Game one was a see-saw affair as neither team could get a lead bigger than three points. The Bearcats led at 14-11 on a Schneider service ace. But Whitman took the lead back at 19-18 on a pair of Bearcat errors.
Jessica Drumm tied it at 25-25 with a kill, but the Missionaries took the next two points on a kill by Brey and another attack error. Durham’s kill made it 29-28 Whitman and Lydia Hayes ended the game with a kill for the Missionaries.
In game two, with seniors Schneider and Kristin Kutara controlling the back line and freshmen hitters Jessica McGraw and Durham on the front line, the Bearcats opened up an 18-13 lead on Drumm’s service winner. The Bearcats were up 26-20 on a Whitman attack error before the Missionaries came back.
Whitman finally tied the game at 27-27 on a kill by Leslie Compean, then swept the next three points on Bearcat hitting errors.
In game three, Whitman bolted to a 7-2 lead on Brey’s kill. The Bearcats pulled within one at 18-17 on Durham’s kill, but they could get no closer as Whitman closed out the game by scoring the last six points and ending the game on a kill from Kate Borsato.
The Bearcats finish the season at 1-19 overall, 1-15 NWC.
