Castle's Double-Double Leads Pioneers Past Bearcats
SALEM, OR — Crystal Castle scored 21 points and grabbed ten rebounds as the Lewis and Clark Pioneers broke open a close game in the second half to record a 65-53 win over the Willamette University women’s basketball team Tuesday night at the Cone Filed House.
The Bearcats trailed by only two at half-time and tied the game at 29-29 to open the second half on a basket by Brittany Farrer. The Pioneers edged ahead, but the Bearcats tied it again at 37-37 on a Kari Woody jump shot.
No more than five points separated the teams until Castle’s lay-up gave the Pioneers a 48-41 lead with 6:01 to play. The Pioneers then went on an 11-2 run to open a 57-43 lead and the Bearcats could get no closer than nine the rest of the way.
Willamette was led in scoring by Sara Brooks and Tracie Nygaard, both with nine points. Jennifer Bell and Farrer each scored 8. Allsion Farr added 13 points for Lewis and Clark.
Farrer’s six rebounds led the Bearcats, but the Pioneers won the battle of the boards 44-34 behind Castles’ ten caroms and seven by Sara Kettler.
The Pioneers are now 10-7 overall, 6-3 NWC. The Bearcats, who play at PLU on Saturday, fall to 5-12, 0-9 NWC.
