Olinger Named NWC Player of the Week: Gima, Payne, Otawa Receive Honorable Mention
John Olinger was named Northwest Conference Player of the Week Monday as the senior captain led the Willamette University men’s basketball team to a pair of wins last weekend.
Olinger shot 57% from the field, 45% from 3-point range and 91% from the foul line as the Bearcats moved to 5-1 in conference, 9-5 overall, with wins at Pacific and versus Linfield.
Olinger leads the NWC in scoring, tied with Whitman’s Matt Kelly at 19.4 points per game. In fact, Olinger is ranked in the top 15 in all but two statistical categories including 1st in free throw percentage ( .866), 2nd in steals (2.29 pg), third in assist to turnover ratio (1.88) and 14th in rebounding.
The Bearcats play at home this weekend against league-leading UPS on Friday and George Fox on Saturday. Tip-off is immediately following the women’s games that begin at 6 p.m.
Also receiving honorable mention honors this week for their efforts were Kei Otawa , Shannon Gima and Laura Payne.
Otawa racked up four first place finishes as the Bearcats split dual meets with Whitworth and Whitman. Gima had a pair of victories for the women's swim team over the weekend. Payne continues to average double figures for the Bearcats women’s basketball team.
