CAPITOL CUP CLASSIC: Saturday Games RECAP; Concordia Wins Twice Including 7-3 Win Over Bearcats

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY 7, WILLAMETTE 3:
SALEM, OR — Brynn Ludwig knocked in six runs with a bases loaded double and a three-run home run as Concordia University beat Willamette University in the late afternoon game at the Capitol Cup Classic Saturday at Willamette Field.
Ludwig cleared the bases in the second inning with a double that scored Cijay Koniuni, Denise Benedict and Krystal Moon. Ludwig took advantage of a Bearcat error in the fourth, driving in Benedict and Kelly Rattay with the game-winning home run..
Willamette had several chances to rally. The bearcat pushed across a single run in the fifth when Liz Gilgan’s sacrifice fly plated Brittany Dearing. Willamette got another run in the sixth when Bailey Harris got her first collegiate RBI on a sacrifice fly to left that scored Marianne Ward.
After Concordia scored a run in the sixth to make it 7-2, Willamette again threatened, but could only score once more on Geneva Hale’s RBI single.
Annele Huckins pitched six innings and gave up two runs in the win. Taryn Scott pitched the final inning, allowing one run on four hits.
Brittney Tachara took the loss for Willamette, allowing five earned runs in five innings as she lost her first game of the season and fell to 1-1.
Willamette is now 1-2 on the young season and plays Corban College tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the final game of the Capitol Cup. Concordia, 8-1, will also continue play in the Capitol Cup, heading for a pair of games at t George Fox Sunday.
CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY11, NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN COLLEGE 7:
SALEM, OR — Shayna Ostlund hit two homeruns and drive in five runs, leading Concordia University to an 11-7 win over Northwest Christian college Saturday in a Capitol Cup Classic game held at Willamette Field.
Ostlund hit a 3-rn home run in the top of the first inning to put Concordia on top 3-0. Kelly Ratay added an RBI single in the first to make it 4-0. But NCC came right back in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs on an RBI triple by Kathy Richard. An error drove home the second NCC run and Bethany McAllister drove in the third run with an RBI single.
Ostlund homered again in the second inning, this time a two-run shot to give Concordia a 6-3 lead. After NCC got one run back on another RBI single by Richard, scored three more times in the third on Cijay Koniuni’s two-run homer and Denise Benedict’s RBI double.
NCC made it 9-7 with three runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by Lanea Hyland’s two-run home run and Jenny Lipp’s RBI single that drove in McAllister.
But Concordia put the game away with two runs in the top of the seventh, scoring a pair of unearned runs following an error by NCC centerfielder Lisa Martinez.
Annele Huckins picked up the win, going five innings and allowing two hits. Megan McLearn took the loss for NCC.
Concordia raised its season record to 7-1 while NCC dropped to 2-1.
OIT 5, NWC 1:
SALEM, OR — Kindle Thompson and Brandi Paxton each drove in two runs and Megan Erner pitched a complete game 3-hitter as the Oregon Institute of Technology defeated northwest Christian College 5-1 in a Capitol Cup Classic tournament game played at Willamette Field Saturday afternoon.
Thompson got the first run of the game home when her groundout plated Kelsie Anhorn who had singled and moved to third on a pair of walks.
NCC tied it in the bottom of the first when Lanea Hyland doubled home Kathy Richard to tie the score at 1-1.
OIT broke open the game with three runs in the third inning. Brittany Schlee singled home one run before Paxton’s double plated two more for a 4-1 OIT lead. Thompson drove home the game’s final run with an RBI single to plate Jenni Bittle.
Erner allowed no hits after the fourth inning, striking out three and walking one on the complete game victory.
