Eleven Run Seventh Propels Bearcats Past Pioneers, 13-2, in NWC Action Sunday
SALEM, OR — The Willamette University baseball team exploded for 11 runs in the 7th inning to defeat Lewis & Clark 13-2 in a Northwest Conference game Sunday afternoon at Spec Keene Stadium.
Kelly Gilmore, Matt Johnson and Kyle Stalker all had three RBI as the Bearcats raised their season record to 7-2, 2-1 NWC. The Pioneers fall to 4-10 overall and 1-2 NWC.
In the Bearcats’ half of the seventh, Adam Holden walked, Sean Anderson doubled and Gilmore walked to load the bases. Johnson drove in the eventual winning run with a base hit before Stalker’s double cleared the bases to give the Bearcats a 6-2 lead.
After the Bearcats loaded the bases again, Ellis Webster delivered a two-run single. Holden walked again to load the bases before Anderson walked in a run and Gilmore singled in two more. Johnson delivered another two-run double as the Bearcats parlayed seven hits in the inning for 11 runs.
Kelsey Nakata pitched three hitless innings of relief to pick up his third win of the season. Drew Herbert started for the Bearcats and went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Matt Bicocca pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The Bearcats fell behind 2-0 when Lewis & Clark scored on Jordan Shibata’s two-out, two-run double.
Willamette came back to tie the game in the fifth. Holden led off with a double and scored on Gilmore’s single. Gilmore came around to score on Steve Johnson’s RBI single, setting the stage for the Bearcats 11-run explosion in the 7th inning.
Gilmore and Johnson each had three hits and three RBI. Gilmore also scored three runs. Stalker and Grant Yamaguchi each had two hits. Holden was 1-3 with two walks and three runs scored. Webster was 1-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
For Lewis and Clark, Shibata had three hits and two RBI.
The Bearcats continue NWC play next weekend as they travel to UPS for a three-game set Saturday and Sunday.
