Whitman Holds Off Willamette 63-45
SALEM, OR — Three players scored in double figures as the Whitman Missionaries defeated the Willamette University women’s basketball team 63-45 in a Northwest Conference game Saturday night at the Cone Field House.
Lizzy Washburn led the Pirates with a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing ten rebounds. Laura Vertatschitsch scored a game-high 16 points and Megan Higgins had ten points, five assists and six rebounds.
Willamette was led by Jennifer Bell’s 14 points. Laura Payne added 13 points and Rebekah Well chipped in six.
The game was close for much of the first half. Wells’ jumper made it 16-15 with 9:54 to go in the first half. But Whitman closed out the first half on a 12-4 run to take a 28-19 lead at the break.
The Bearcats fell behind by 18 on Emily Shubin’s free throw with 11:36 to play before the Bearcats started a run. Bell hit three of her four 3-pointers in the next four minutes as the Bearcats pulled to within ten at 49-39.
But the Missionaries started a steady progression to the foul line as Vertatschitsch and Washburn were a combined 14-21 from the stripe.
Whitman shot 41% for the game to 32% for the Bearcats. Washburn’s ten boards led Whitman to a 42-27 rebounding edge.
Whitman climbs to 11-9 on the season, 7-5 NWC. The Bearcats fall to 5-15, 0-12 NWC.
