Bearcats Fall Twice to CSEBRedlands, CA - Despite a Geneva Hale home run, the Willamette University softball team dropped a 7-3 decision to Cal State East Bay in game two of a doubleheader kicking off the Bearcats spring break. The Bearcats lost the first game 7-0 as they drop to 5-7 overall.
Hale was the bright spot for the Bearcats in game two, going 2-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. After CSEB took a 1-0 lead in game two, Hale doubled to lead off the second and came around to score when Marianne Ward's grounder was botched by Cal.
Cal State came back to score four times in the third and twice in the sixth. Meanwhile, the Bearcats posted singles runs in the fourth and the seventh. In the 4th, down 5-1, Molly Barnes doubled to right and came around to score on Marissa Richards RBI single.
Hale got the Bearcats final run when she homered leading off the seventh, her fourth of the season.
Nikki Franchi took the loss, giving up four earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.
In game one, the Bearcats managed eight hits, but failed to score. CSEB put up a five-spot in the first inning and two more in the third to coast to the win. Brittany Tachara gave up all seven runs, five of them earned, in three innings of work. Laura Milne pitched four scoreless innings in relief.
LaShawna Holcomb had two hits for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats continue their swing through California on Sunday, squaring off against Claremont College in a doubleheader.
