Big Weekend on Tap for Bearcat Athletics; Hall of Fame Banquet Saturday Night and Memorial Service for Coach Bowles Sunday
Willamette University Athletics will induct a new class into its Hall of Fame Saturday night at a banquet at the Cat Cavern. But this year, there will be just a note of sadness at the proceedings as the Bearcats also honor legendary coach Chuck Bowles who died earlier this year.
At the Hall of Fame banquet Saturday night, inductees including football coach Dan Hawkins, track and cross country star Dave Flemming, tennis coach Russ Beaton, and multi-sport athletes Ron Jensen and Mea (Franz) Neal all will be on hand for the induction ceremonies.
Statesman Journal reporter Reid English wrote a story on the class that can be found at

On Sunday morning at 10 a.m., there will be a memorial service held for Coach Bowles in the Cone Field House. Bowles will also be honored at the track meet in his name, the Charles Bowles Willamette Invite, which will be held Friday and Saturday at McCulloch Stadium.
On Saturday at about 12:15 p.m., former Bearcat track and cross country athletes will run a lap in honor of Coach Bowles.
