Franchi Hits and Pitches Bearcats To 6-4 Win Over Redlands; Tuesday Game at Cal Lutheran is CancelledREDLANDS, CA - Nikki Franchi homered, drove in two runs, scored twice and pitched a complete game, leading the Bearcats to a 6-4 win over Redlands College in the first of two games Monday afternoon.
Redlands won the second game 10-0. The Bearcats scheduled game for Tuesday against Cal Lutheran has been canceled due to rain. The Bearcats return home to face UPS and PLU this weekend.
Willamette jumped on top in game one with two runs in the first inning. Cari Schruth walked and went to third on Molly Barnes double to left field. Schruth cruised home on Geneva Hale's sacrifice fly and Barnes scored on Marissa Richards' base hit.
After that it was all Franchi. The freshman right-hander allowed an unearned run in the first and one in the fourth. Meanwhile she drove home Richards with an infield hit in the fourth On that same play, Bailey Harris, who had walked, came around to score on a Redlands throwing error. Franchi then scored in the fourth on Liz Gilgan's RBI.
Franchi gave herself an insurance run when she hit her first collegiate home run to lead off the seventh, giving the Bearcats a 6-2 lead. Franchi needed that extra run as Redlands tallied twice in the ninth before a fly ball to left ended the game.
Redlands came back in the nightcap, scoring eight runs in the fourth inning and ending the game early with a 1-0 victory in five innings.
The Bearcats managed only five hits in the contest. Laura Milne took the loss.
With Tuesday's cancellation, Willamette ends its California road swing with a 2-4 record. The Bearcats are now 7-9 overall. Redlands is 14-7 on the season.
