Bearcats Fall To CSUEB, 9-1; Sunday's Game at Noon is Willamette's Last Game of '06SALEM, OR - Ralph Luna and Kyle Hay both hit home runs and Craig Eagle raised his season record to 6-2 as Cal State University East Bay defeated the Willamette University baseball team 9-1 in a non-conference game played Saturday afternoon at John Lewis Field.
CSUEB (20-10) scored in each of the first five innings to open up a 7-0 lead. Luna went 4-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Hay was 2-3 with 3 RBI and a run scored. Third baseman Anthony Quintana was 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Cal State scored single runs in each of the first three innings off Willamette starter Adam Beebe (0-2). In the first, Quintana singled with two outs, then moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Lamont Toney's single.
Luna homered in the second to make it 2-0. Brandon Sapenter his a sacrifice fly in the third to score Patrick Whelly.
The Pioneers put the game away with three in the fourth. Luna singled and scored on Hay's home run to make it 5-0. Quintana doubled home Whelley, who had walked.
The Bearcats (18-19) scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Johnson singled and came around to score on Sean Anderson's RBI single. Willamette had a number of chances to cut into Cal's lead. The Bearcats got nine hits in the game, but left nine runners on base.
Eagle gave up eight of those hits, but struck out six to keep the Bearcats at bay. Conrad Diaz pitched the final two innings, giving up one hit.
The two teams tangle again on Sunday in the rubber game of the series. The first pitch is scheduled for noon at John Lewis Field.
