Butler Scores Decisive Goal in 1-0 Victory over Cal Lutheran
SALEM, OR -- Willamette University senior midfielder Susan Butler (Boise, ID/Boise HS) scored the game's only goal at 62:35, and senior goalkeeper Kari Woody (Boise, ID/Timberline HS) recorded three saves, as the Bearcats defeated California Lutheran University, 1-0, at Sparks Field on Friday, Sept. 8. Willamette improved to 3-0 on the season. Cal Lutheran fell to 0-2.
Butler, who has produced three goals this year, has scored one goal in each game for the Bearcats this fall. Jessica Lammers (Sr., MF, Concord, CA/Northgate HS) received an assist on the play, after sending Butler a crossing pass from the left side. Butler shot from 18 yards out.
Willamette recorded 19 total shots, while CLU earned 8 shots overall. The Bearcats achieved a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
Woody's three saves were all Willamette needed. Even so, two were solid athletic plays, as she pushed dangerous shots over the crossbar.
The shutout was the second for Willamette this season. Woody played the first 45 minutes in WU's season-opening, 8-0 win over Buena Vista University (Iowa) on Sept. 2. WU has allowed just one goal in three games.
The Bearcats remain at home to play again on Wednesday, Sept. 13, when they will take on UC-Santa Cruz. Game time at Sparks Field is set for 7 p.m. (PDT).
