Pacific Downs Bearcats, 30-19, 30-17, 30-26, in Northwest Conference Match

SALEM, OR Pacific University achieved a .315 team hitting percentage on its way to sweeping Willamette University, 30-19, 30-17, 30-26, in a Northwest Conference volleyball match, Friday, Sept. 22 at Cone Field House. The Boxers were led by Melissa Dunn, who recorded 12 kills and a .435 hitting percentage. Pacific upped its record to 4-9 overall, 1-2 in the NWC, while Willamette fell to 3-9, 0-3 in the NWC.

In the first game, Pacific build a 10-5 lead. After Willamette pulled within four points at 11-7, the Boxers went on a 5-1 run to take an eight-point advantage at 16-8. Pacific led by at least five points during the remainder of the game.

The second game opened with a 4-0 run by the Boxers, which was followed by three straight points for the Bearcats. Pacific tallied the next four points, three with Dunn serving, for an 8-3 lead. The Boxers also scored three of the next four points for an 11-5 lead, as they began to pull away for a 13-point final margin.

Willamette scored the first three points of the third game, and also led 4-1. The Bearcats held a 7-5 advantage following a kill by Mary Butler (So., MB, Robbins, CA/Yuba City HS), but WU lost 10 of the next 11 points, as the Boxers moved in front, 15-8. Willamette eventually cut the deficit to four points, 24-20, then got within three points, 27-24, after a kill by Kelley Lindstrom (So., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS). The teams exchanged the next five rallies, as Pacific completed the match with 30-26 win.

Dunn was the only Boxer with double-digit kills. Jill Peacock and Sarah Monda each added eight kills, while setter Anela Iseke contributed 38 assists. Alyssa Finn, the libero for Pacific, was credited with a match-high 19 digs. Peacock provided 11 digs, helping Pacific record a total of 52 digs during the match. The Boxers achieved 10 serving aces, but also committed 10 serving errors.

Willamette’s top hitter was Jordyn Smith (Jr., RS, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley HS), who registered eight kills, just one attacking error and 18 total attacks for a .389 attack percentage. Lindstrom chipped in six kills and Butler supplied a .333 hitting percentage, with five kills and one error on 12 attacks. Setter Jessica Drumm (Jr., Salem OR/South Salem HS) earned 25 assists. Jessica Durham (So., OH/LIB, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) recorded a team-high 14 digs.

The Bearcats hit just 0.96 during the match, including .030 in the first game and .091 in the second game. WU accumulated 43 digs, but had 21 attacking errors and five ball-handling errors.

Both teams will play Northwest Conference matches on the road on Saturday, Sept. 23. Willamette will travel to Tacoma, Wash. to take on Pacific Lutheran University at 7 p.m. (PDT). Pacific will take on Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., also at 7 p.m. (PDT).
