Willamette Loses to Linfield, Defeats Evergreen, on Second Day of Tournament

SALEM, OR - The Bearcats of Willamette University split a pair of matches on the second day of the Willamette Tournament, falling to Linfield College, 30-15, 30-18, 30-23, and defeating Evergreen State College, 30-27, 30-19, 25-30, 30-21, on Saturday, Sept. 2. WU concluded the tournament with a 1-3 record.

Linfield, which also defeated the University of California-Santa Cruz, 30-16, 30-15, 30-25, on Saturday, went 4-0 during the tournament. Evergreen lost to UC-Santa Cruz, 30-25, 30-24, 30-25, in Saturday's opening match and dropped to 0-5 overall (0-3 in the tournament) after falling to Willamette.

In Willamette's match with Linfield, the visiting Wildcats received 12 kills each from Lauren Kreiger and Lisa Brocard. Emily Vuylsteke added nine kills, as LC earned 51 kills and a .320 team hitting percentage.

The Bearcats managed just 29 kills, with 23 errors against Linfield. Julie Stutzman (Fr., OH, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) led Willamette with eight kills. Jordyn Smith (Jr., RS, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley HS) achieved six kills and a .267 hitting percentage.

Jessica Durham (So., OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) led all players from both teams by recording 18 digs. Edyth Lee-Barnes (Fr., OH/RS, Corvallis, OR/Corvallis HS) supplied 12 digs for the Bearcats, while Alona Lyamin (Jr., DS, Moses Lake, WA/Big Bend CC) accumulated 10 digs. Linfield received 16 digs from Kreiger.

Linfield amassed seven serving aces and had four serving errors. WU recorded just four aces, but three came from Julie Christine (Jr., MB, Sammamish, WA/Eastlake HS). The Bearcats made eight serving errors.

Nikki Lytle (Fr., OH, Culver, OR/Redmond HS) produced 20 kills for Willamette in the win over Evergreen. Stutzman tacked on another 18 kills, helping the Bearcats achieve 65 kills during the match.

Several other Willamette players made significant contributions against the Geoducks. Jessica Drumm (Jr., S, Salem, OR/South Salem HS) dished out 52 assists and registered 19 digs. Durham earned 21 digs, Lyamin supplied 18 digs and Mary Butler (So., MB, Robbins, CA/Yuba City HS) slammed down nine kills.

For Evergreen, Emily Peterson led the way with 16 kill and a match-high 26 digs. Ann Forman ended the match with 21 digs, while Kandice Gleaves provided eight kills.

The Bearcats held the Geoducks to a .136 team hitting percentage. Meanwhile, Willamette hit .251, with four players supplying percentages above .300.

Willamette returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 5 for a match on the campus of crosstown rival Corban College. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. (PDT).

The Willamette vs. Corban match will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis by Capital Community Television (CCTV). The game is slated for the following broadcast times: Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 7 at 12 p.m., Friday, Sept. 8 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. All four broadcasts will be aired on Salem cable channel 22.
