Whitman Defeats Willamette in Three Games to Open Northwest Conference Schedule
SALEM, OR -- Leslie Compean earned 13 kills and a .417 hitting percentage to lead Whitman College to a 30-24, 30-25, 30-20 victory over Willamette University, in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams, Friday, Sept. 15 at Cone Field House. Whitman improved its record to 5-4, 1-0 in the NWC, while Willamette moved to 3-7, 0-1 in the NWC.
The Missionaries also benefited from the efforts of Emily Seidor, who registered nine kills and no attacking errors on 13 attacks for a .692 hitting percentage. Lydia Hayes added eight kills for Whitman.
Kristan Brown achieved 11 digs for Whitman, while Kate Borsato supplied 32 assists, six digs and three kills on four attacks. Overall, Whitman finished the match with 45 kills and 47 digs.
Willamette received seven kills each from Kelley Lindstrom (So., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS), Julie Stutzman (Fr., OH, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) and Mary Butler (So., MB, Robbins, CA/Yuba City HS). Stutzman also contributed eight digs and three block assists. Lindstrom tacked on seven digs and Butler provided one block solo and two block assists. The Bearcats earned 34 kills, with setter Jessica Drum (Jr., Salem, OR/South Salem HS) recording 24 assists to go with 10 digs.
Willamette will host Whitworth College on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. (PDT) in another Northwest Conference match. On Friday, Whitworth was defeated by 10th-ranked Linfield College, 30-23, 30-26, 30-21, in NWC action.
