Willamette Crushes Buena Vista, 8-0SALEM, OR - Six players scored goals for the Bearcats, including two each by Emily Gross (So., F, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) and Elizabeth Tatlock (Fr., F, Denver, CO/St. Mary's Academy), as Willamette University opened the 2006 season with a shelling of Buena Vista University (Iowa), 8-0, at Sparks Field on Saturday, Sept. 2. While the Bearcat offense was lighting up the scoreboard at one end of the field, the Willamette defense was holding Buena Vista without a shot.
Willamette recorded 55 total shots, with 20 on goal, as the ball remained on Buena Vista's side of the field most of the night. Three Willamette goalkeepers shared the shutout, with Kari Wood (Sr., Boise, ID/Timberline HS) going the first 45 minutes, followed by Laura Holahan (So., GK, Anacortes, WA/Anacortes HS) for 27:22 and Katie Peterson (Independence, OR/Central HS) for the final 17:38. Willamette also achieved a 14-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Starting goalie Emily Carlson recorded eight saves for Buena Vista. Back-up goalie Bri Holmes added four saves for the Beavers.
Gross was involved in four of Willamette's goals, as she not only scored twice, but also provided two assists. Susan Butler (Sr., MF, Boise, ID/Boise HS) scored one goal and assisted on three others.
Willamette tallied four goals in each half, with Tatlock scoring the final goal of the first half at 40:27 and adding the first goal of the second half at 60:46. Other goal scorers for WU were Laura Uhlmansiek (Sr., MF, Woodenville, WA/Overlake HS), Rachel Janny (Fr., F, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) and Meghan Anderson (Fr., F, Eugene, OR/South Eugene HS). Gross and Butler each registered nine shots, with Gross placing a team-high four shots on goal.
The Bearcats remain at home on Sunday, Sept. 3 to take on California State University-East Bay at 12 p.m. (PDT) in the second game of WU's four-game, season-opening homestand. Willamette is set to continue the homestand against California Lutheran University on Friday, Sept.8, before hosting the University of California-Santa Cruz on Wednesday, Sept. 13. The California Lutheran and UC-Santa Cruz matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. (PDT) each night.
