Bearcats Finish in Sixth Place at NWC Fall Classic; Kraal Ties for Fifth in Individual Standings

SISTERS, ORE. -- Martin Kraal (Sr., Springfield, OR/Springfield HS) of Willamette University shot a 76 in the first round and a 74 in the second round to finish at 150 and tie for fifth place at the Northwest Conference Men’s Golf Fall Classic, Oct. 21-22 in Sisters, Ore. The event was played at the Aspen Lakes Golf Course, par 72.

Linfield College won the team title with a 596 total (298-298). Willamette finished in sixth place at 641 (317-324). Medalist honors went to Tyler Nelson from Linfield, who earned a 141 overall score. Nelson was the only golfer to break par on the first day, when he shot a five-under 67. On the second day, he carded a 74.

Nelson won by two strokes over Tim Bartz from the University of Puget Sound, who shot 143 (73-70), including a two-under-par 70 for the low round on the second day. Third place was claimed by Jeff Nigro of Linfield with a 148 (73-75). Fourth place went to Andrew Parrott of Whitworth, who shot a combined 149 (75-74). Kraal of Willamette was joined by Paul DeBarros of Whitman College and by Dan Cashmere and Taryn Baseth of Pacific University in a four-way tie for fifth place.

Following Linfield in the team standings were Whitworth College in second with a 607, Puget Sound in third at 609, Pacific Lutheran University in fourth at 623 and Pacific in fifth with a 628. Trailing Willamette in the standings were Whitman in seventh at 653 and Lewis & Clark College in eighth at 676.

Kraal was tied for ninth after the first round, but moved up three spots with his two-over-par 74 on the second day. The 74 tied three other golfers for the fourth-best 18 holes of the second round. Only Bartz of UPS (70), DeBarros of Whitman (71) and Joel Rychard of Linfield (73) shot better on the second day.

Also breaking 160 for Willamette during the two-day event was Baylor Falk (Jr., Albany, OR/West Albany HS). He carded a 79-80--159 for the Bearcats. Other WU results were Ben Bryant (So., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) with a 164 (78-86), Robbie Beard with a 168 (84-84), Hardy Almes (So., White Plains, NY/Hackley School) at 176 (89-87) and Tyler Robinson (Jr., Roseburg, OR/Umpqua Valley Christian School) with a 179 (93-86).

The NWC Fall Classic is one of three tournaments used to determine the Northwest Conference champion for 2006-07. The two remaining tournaments will be held during the spring season.
