Ueno Finishes in Second Place, as Willamette's Golf Team Ties for Second at George Fox Invitational
NEWBURG, ORE. Whitney Ueno (So., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) shot an 83 to take second place in the medalist race, while leading Willamette University to a tie for second in the team standings, at the George Fox Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 1. The event, held at the Chehalem Glenn Golf Course (Par 72), was won by Linfield College with a team score of 355. Willamette and Pacific University tied for second place at 365.
Ueno, who took 10th place at the NCAA Division III National Championship this past spring, shot 42 on the front nine and 41 on the back nine. She finished two strokes behind medalist Leslie Wheeler from Linfield. Wheeler recorded an 81, with a 40 on the front nine before matching Ueno with a 41 on the back nine.
One of Wheeler's Linfield teammates, Brittany Johnston, shot a 40 on the back nine to lead all players, but couldn't overcome a 46 over the first nine holes. Johnston took third place overall at 86.
Fourth place was a tie between Rachel Shahbaz (Fr., Portland, OR/St. Mary's Academy) of Willamette and Kelly Hartley from Pacific, both at 87. Shahbaz shot 44-43 and Hartley went 46-41.
In addition to Linfield, Willamette and Pacific, the tournament also included host George Fox University and Lewis & Clark College. GFU, in its first season of competition, shot 465 to take fourth. L&C did not record a team score, since only three golfers competed for the Pioneers.
Ueno and Shahbaz led the Bearcats, who rounded out their team scoring with the efforts of May Ushikubo (So., West Vancouver, BC, Canada/Collingwood School) at 91 (46-45) and Michelle Benrath (Sr., Bend, OR/Bend HS) at 104 (52-52). Andrea Hand (So., Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS) shot 115, as did Tanya Schiller (Fr., South Bend, WA/South Bend HS).
The Willamette women's golf team will return to action on Monday, Oct. 16, when they host the NWC's next Five-Way Tournament at the Illahe Hills Country Club in Salem, Ore. The event will get underway at 12 p.m (PDT).
