Willamette Shows Strong Attack, but Puget Sound Wins Match at Cone Field House

SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University led 17-11 in the first game and committed just 13 attacking errors during the match, but the University of Puget Sound defeated the Bearcats, 30-27, 30-20, 30-16, in a Northwest Conference match at Cone Field House on Saturday, Oct. 7. UPS increased its record to 11-4 on the season and moved to 6-2 in the NWC. Willamette went to 4-14 overall, 0-8 in the conference.

Mary Butler (So., MB, Robbins, CA/Yuba City HS) led Willamette with 10 kills. Julie Stutzman (Fr., OH, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) and Jordyn Smith (Jr., RS, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley HS) each added seven kills, as Willamette registered 38 total kills and a .191 team hitting percentage. Brooke Smith (So., RS, Glide, OR/Glide HS) provided a .750 hitting percentage, with three kills on four attacks, while Smith hit .261 and Jordyn Smith hit .333.

The Bearcats trailed 3-0 early in the first game, but displayed quality play while tying the game at 5-5 and eventually taking a 14-8 lead. Later in the game, WU led 20-15 following a kill by Stutzman. The Bearcats also held a 25-21 advantage after a kill by Butler.

UPS recorded the next seven points to claim a 28-25 advantage. Butler provided another kill to pull Willamette within two points, but the Loggers eventually prevailed 30-27.

Willamette achieved a 10-7 lead in the second game after winning three rallies in a row. The Loggers answered with seven unanswered points, including three kills by Monica Groves. Puget Sound led the remainder of the game, then built leads of 5-1 and 10-4 in the third game.

Puget Sound earned a .379 team hitting percentage, as the Loggers recorded 55 kills with just 11 attacking errors. Grove led all players with 19 kills and hit .515. Lindsey Denman contributed 14 kills and just one attacking error, while Jamie Eggers finished with 11 kills.

Rachel Gross supplied the Loggers with 16 digs. Eggers and Molly Hunsinger provided 15 digs apiece. Setter Jamee Fred contributed 52 assists and eight digs.

Willamette benefited from 11 digs each by Christine Dion (Fr., DS/RS, San Jose, CA/Presentation HS/University of Portland) and Alona Lyamin (Jr., DS, Moses Lake, WA/Moses Lake Christian Academy/Big Bend CC). Setter Brittany Ashby (So., S, Federal Way, WA/Decator HS) had 31 assists.

The next match for the Bearcats is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 13 at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash. Match time is set for 7 p.m. (PDT). Willamette will play at Whitworth College on Saturday, Oct. 14, starting at 7 p.m. (PDT) in Spokane, Wash. Both matches will be Northwest Conference contests.
