Whitworth Sweeps Willamette in NWC Swimming

SPOKANE, WASH. -- Whitworth College swept Willamette University in a Northwest Conference swim meet on Friday, Nov. 17, as the Pirates defeated the Bearcats in the women’s match, 109-69, and downed WU in the men’s match, 116-64. Both of Whitworth’s teams improved to 3-1 overall, 3-0 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette was playing its first dual match of the season.

Becca Fischer (Sr., Billings, MT/Billings West HS) recorded the fastest time in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke, as she clocked in at 1:11.24 to finish 1.2 seconds in front of Lauren Gard of Whitworth, who was timed at 1:12.44. Gard was swimming exhibition because WC had already clinched the team victory. Fischer also took second place in the 50-yard freestyle, as she completed the race in 26.08 to finish one-half second behind Samantha Kephart of Whitworth, whose time of 25.48 won the event.

Kephart also won the women’s 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.11. Bridget Sutherland (Jr., Everett, WA/Everett HS) finished second in the event, as she was clocked at 1:03.91.

Kei Otawa (Sr., Moscow, ID/Moscow HS) won the men’s 50-yard freestyle by more than three-quarters of a second over Scott Adams of Whitworth in the evening’s fourth men’s event. Otawa touched out at 22.00 seconds, while Adams finished the race in 22.83 seconds. Otawa achieved the second-fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:01.30, with Bryan Clarke of Whitworth (exhibition) earning the top time in 1:00.82.

In the men’s competition, David Dolphay of Whitworth won two events. He claimed first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle at 10:12.24. He also took first place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.87 seconds.

The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, Nov. 18, when they complete the weekend trip with an NWC dual meet a Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash. Willamette and the Missionaries are slated to start the meet at 1 p.m. (PST) using the long format.
