Fischer Takes Fourth in 50 Free, Helps Bearcats Finish Third in 400 Medley Relay, on First Day of Northwest Invitational
TACOMA, WASH. Senior swimmer Becca Fischer (Billings, MT/Billings West HS) took fourth place in the 50-yard freestyle shortly before teaming up with Shannon Gima (Jr., Alameda, CA/Lick-Wilmerding HS), Bridget Sutherland (Jr., Everett, WA/Everett HS) and Whitney Pryce (Fr., Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury HS) for a third place finish in the 400-yard medley relay, to highlight Willamette's results on the first day of the Northwest Invitational at Pacific Lutheran University. Fischer and the Bearcats will return to PLU on Saturday for the final day of competition.
Fischer completed the 50 free in 26.55 seconds, as she edged out Jackie Palmero of Cal State University-East Bay for fourth place. Palmero was clocked at 26.61 seconds. Also in the battle for fourth were Theresa Likarish of Lewis & Clark College (26.62) and Nicole Parada of Linfield (26.63). The event was won by Mica Bailey of PLU, who timed out at 25.84 seconds.
It was a short turnaround for Fischer, heading into the women's 400-yard medley relay, as only one event, the men's 50-yard freestyle, was held between the women's 50 free and the medley relay.
Even so, Fischer helped WU clock in at 4:19.35 for a solid hold on third place among 10 teams entered in the event. The Bearcats finished 3.1 seconds in front of CSU-East Bay, which was timed at 4:22.45. Whitman College won the event in a time of 4:16.52.
Other top results for the WU women's team included Sutherland's 10th place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, plus Prcye's 10th place finish in the 50-yard freestyle and a 13th place finish from Shanley Roxburgh (Sr., Waipahu, HI/Punahou HS) in the 200-yard individual medley. Willamette placed eighth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:49.93.
For the Bearcat men's team, the top finisher was Matthew Tanigawa (Fr., Honolulu, HI/Baptist Academy), who took 11th place in the 200-yard individual medley. His time was 2:15.63.
Greg Henselman (Jr., Corvallis, OR/Corvallis HS) finished 13th in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:42.98. Willamette's men's team took seventh place in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:38.98. The Bearcats were unable to complete the 400-yard medley relay.
