Lewis & Clark Sweeps Swim Meet in Portland

PORTLAND, ORE. -- Lewis & Clark College swept visiting Willamette University in Northwest Conference men’s and women’s swimming action on Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Zehntbauer Swim Pavilion. The Pioneer men narrowly defeated Willamette, 91-85, while the Pioneer women defeated Willamette, 143-60. The Willamette men fell to 0-5 overall and 0-5 in the NWC, while the Bearcat women dropped to 1-5 overall, including 1-4 in the NWC.

Willamette’s Kei Otawa (Sr., Moscow, ID/Moscow HS) won three events on the day. It was the third straight dual meet in which he won all three individual events he entered. Otawa won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.08 seconds, the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.94, and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:21.57.

Pete Kahn was the only other Bearcat to pick up a first place finish on the men’s side. He won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:14.32.

Both Greg Henselman (Jr., Corvallis, OR/Corvallis HS) and Kevin Tangeman (Fr., Sherwood, OR/Sherwood HS) recorded two second place finishes for Willamette. Henselman placed second in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 19:31.87 and took second in the 200-yard butterfly after clocking in at 2:30.58. Tangeman finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.66 and was second in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:40.23. Also for the Bearcat men, Cason Schmit (Sr., Oakland, CA/Bishop O’Dowd HS) finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.89 seconds.

One the women’s side, Willamette’s Becca Fischer won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.44 and claimed first place in the 200-yard breaststroke by completing the event in 2:37.50). Fischer also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle, as she clocked in at 26.23.

Four other Bearcat women had second place finishes on the afternoon. Shannon Gima (Jr., Alameda, CA/Lick-Wilmerding HS) was second in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:28.33, Jenna Larrow (Fr., Boise, ID/Timberline HS) was second in the 1,650-yard freestyle after finishing in 20:17.20, Shanley Roxburgh (Sr., Waipahu, HI/Punahou School) finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:38.99, and Lauren Vice (So., Portland, OR/Santa Catalina School) placed second in the 500-yard freestyle at 6:00.85.

The Bearcat men’s and women’s swimming teams will next be in action on Friday, Jan. 26, when they travel to Tacoma, Wash., to face the University of Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference dual meet. Start time is set for 6 p.m. (PST).
