Pacific Lutheran Downs Willamette Swimming Teams in Northwest Conference Action
TACOMA, WASH. -- Pacific Lutheran University defeated Willamette University in men’s and women’s Northwest Conference swimming action on Saturday, Jan. 13 in Tacoma, Wash. On the men’s side, PLU downed the Bearcats, 134-66, while the PLU women won, 126-76. The PLU men improved to 3-1 in the NWC, while the PLU women upped their record to 2-2 in conference action. Both Willamette team fell to 0-2 in the NWC.
For the Bearcat men, senior Kei Otawa (Moscow, ID/Moscow HS) continued to shine, as he picked up three first place finishes on Saturday. Otawa won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.61, the 200-yard butterfly in 2:08.66, and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:16.95.
Three Bearcats took home second place finishes, as did the men’s 400-yard medley relay team of David Sluss (Sr., Green Bay, WI/Ashwaubenon HS), Matthew Tanigawa (Fr., Honolulu, HI/Baptist Academy), Kevin Tangeman (Fr., Sherwood, OR/Sherwood HS), and Cason Schmit (Sr., Oakland, CA/Bishop O’Dowd HS). Schmit took second in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.09 seconds, Tangeman was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.49 seconds, and Pete Kahn (So., Billings, MT/Billings Senior HS) was second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:18.32.
On the women’s side, Shannon Gima (Jr., Alameda, CA/Lick-Wilmerding HS) and Becca Fischer (Sr., Billings, MT/Billings West HS) took home first place finishes, and both were part of the winning 400-yard medley relay team that defeated PLU in a time of 4:31.99. Whitney Pryce (Fr., Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury HS) and Brittany Thiemens (Jr., Bellevue, WA/Bellevue HS) were the other two swimmers on the 400-yard medley relay team.
Gima won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:28.17, while Fischer took first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:39.38. Fischer also had a second place finish in the 200-yard IM in 2:24.28, while Gima was part of the 400-yard freestyle team that finished second. Jenna Larrow (Fr., Boise, ID/Timberline HS), Shanley Roxburgh (Sr., Waipahu, HI/Punahou School), and Lauren Vice (So., Portland, OR/Santa Catalina School) were the other members of the 400-yard freestyle team.
Also taking second place for the Bearcat women were Pryce in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events, with times of and 1:00.84 and 2:11.68, respectively, Thiemens in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.77 seconds, Vice in the 500-yard freestyle at 6:07.23, and Coral Sorensen (Fr., Auburn, WA/John F. Kennedy HS) in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:32.83.
The Bearcat men’s and women’s swimming teams will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19, when they travel to McMinnville, Ore. to face Linfield College in NWC action. Meet time is set for 6 p.m. (PST).
