George Fox Improves to 14-6, 10-3 in NWC, with 75-32 Win over Willamette
SALEM, ORE. -- George Fox University held Willamette University to just 22.6% shooting (14 of 62), as the Bruins defeated the Bearcats, 75-32, in a Northwest Conference game at Cone Field House on Friday, Feb. 9. George Fox improved to 14-6 overall, 10-3 in the NWC. The Bruins entered the game in second place in the conference.
Willamette was playing without leading scorer Keilyn Fujioka (Fr., F, Kailua, HI/Iolani HS) because of a knee injury. The Bearcats fell to 4-18 overall, including 2-11 in the NWC.
George Fox scored the game’s first 10 points and owned a 35-14 advantage at halftime. The Bruins were led by Katy Campbell with 11 points and by Robin Taylor, who scored 10 points. Kristen Shielee led George Fox with nine rebounds, as the Bruins acheived a 47-33 rebouding margin. B.B. Gardner earned six assists. GFU’s balanced attack included eight players with five or more points.
Willamette’s top scorers were Laura Payne (Jr., G, Sammamish, WA/Skyline HS) and Rebekah Wells (Jr., G, Lynnwood, WA/Edmonds-Woodway HS) with seven points each. Maggie Hake (Sr., F, Kentfield, CA/Marin Catholic HS) and Tracie Nygaard (Jr., F, Knappa, OR/Knappa HS) added six points apiece.
Kari Woody (Sr., F, Boise, ID/Timberline HS) of Willamette tied Shielee of GFU for game rebounding honors, as she hauled down nine boards. The Bearcats also received a game-high four steals from Sara Brooks (Sr., G, Rainier, OR/Rainier HS)..
Brooks, Hake and Kari Woody all started in their final home game for the Bearcats. The three seniors were honored prior to the start of the game in recognition of their career with the Bearcats. Willamette will play again on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Linfield College. Game time is set for 6 p.m. (PST).
