Linfield Hits 24 of 31 Free Throws, as Wildcats Pull Away from Bearcats, 62-38, in NWC Action
McMINNVILLE, ORE. -- Linfield College built a 25-18 halftime lead, then converted 21 of 27 free throws in the second half, as the Wildcats defeated Willamette University, 62-38, in a Northwest Conference game on Saturday, Feb. 10. Willamette fell to 4-19 overall, 2-12 in the NWC, while Linfield improved to 13-9, 8-6 in the NWC.
Linfield finished the game 24 of 31 at the free throw line (77.4%), while Willamette was 1 of 7 on free throws. Sara Burgoyne led the Wildcats with 14 points, while Courtney McFadden added 13 points on 13 of 14 free throws.
Willamette was led by seniors Kari Woody (F, Boise, ID/Timberline HS) and Maggie Hake (F, Kentfield, CA/Marin Catholic HS) with eight points each. Maggie Wilkens (So., G, Seattle, WA/Lakeside HS) tacked on seven points for the Bearcats, while Laura Payne (Jr., G, Sammamish, WA/Skyline HS) contributed six points.
Both teams made 17 field goals, as Linfield shot 35.4% (17 of 48) and Willamette shot 32.1% (17 of 53). The Wildcats took advantage of their significant edge in free throws and also earned a 41-34 rebounding advantage. Burgoyne paced Linfield with 11 rebounds. Woody and Tracie Nygaard (Jr., F, Knappa, OR/Knappa HS) tied for Willamette’s rebounding lead with seven boards apiece.
Willamette will play its final two games of the season on the road next weekend. The Bearcats will take on Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., on Friday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. (PST) and will play at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., on Saturday, Feb. 17, also at 6 p.m. (PST).
