Bearcats Grab Second Place at Willamette Invitational

(MEN'S GOLF) SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University's men's golf team overcame wet conditions during the second round of the Willamette Invitational to post three individual scores in the 70's, as the Bearcats claimed second place in the team standings with a two-round total of 632, at Creekside Golf Club on Monday, March 19. Pacific University won the event with a score of 616. Willamette and the Boxers tied for the lowest score of the second round at 316, but Pacific built a solid 16-stroke lead in the first round.

Dan Cashmere of Pacific won the medalist race with a score of 142. He shot a two-under 70 in the first round, then carded an even-par 72 in the second round. He won the individual title by 10 strokes over Jason Casey of Pacific Lutheran University, who shot 152 (74-78). Third place went to Wade Douglas of Corban College at 154 (77-77) and fourth place was claimed by Adam Lacey of Central Oregon Community College, who shot 155 (82-73).

Willamette's Ben Bryant (So., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) and Tyler Robinson (Jr., Salem, OR/Umpqua Valley Christian School) tied for fifth place, both at 156. Bryant shot 79-77 and Robinson carded 77-79. WU's Shane Adversalo (Fr., Honolulu, HI/University Laboratory School) tied for ninth at 158 (81-77).

Pacific's team score of 616 and Willamette's 632 led the field. Pacific Lutheran took third place at 639, while Corban finished fourth at 641. Central Oregon CC was fifth with two-round total of 648, followed by the University of Puget Sound in sixth at 653, Linfield College in seventh at 656, Whitman College in eighth at 710 and Lewis & Clark College in ninth at 738.

The top 10 finishes by Bryant, Robinson and Adversalo led a solid performance by the Bearcats. Grant Leslie (Fr., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) shot 165 (82-83), while Robbie Beard (Fr., Yankton, SD/Yankton HS) finished at 174 (84-90). Martin Kraal (Sr., Springfield, OR/Springfield HS) shot a 79 in the first round, but had to withdraw prior to the second round due to an academic commitment. Other scores by Willamette golfers were 170 by Dave Bennett (Jr., Coos Bay, OR/Marshfield HS) and 191 by Pete Hayward (So., Independence, OR/Sam Barlow HS).

The Bearcats return to action March 24-25 at the Pacific Invitational. First round action will be held at Meriwether National Golf Club in Hillsboro, Ore., on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. (PDT), with the second round at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club (Ghost Creek Golf Course) in North Plains, Ore., on Sunday starting at 8 a.m. (PDT).
