George Fox Pulls Away from Bearcats, 12-2
(BASEBALL) SALEM, ORE. -- George Fox University scored six runs in the fifth inning to extend a 4-1 lead, on its way to a 12-2 victory over Willamette University on Monday, March 5. The Bruins completed a sweep of the three-game Northwest Conference series, while improving to 9-0 overall, 3-0 in the NWC. Willamette fell to 3-9 overall and to 0-5 in the NWC.
Preston Langeliers threw the first seven innings for George Fox to earn the win. He allowed two runs and six hits, while striking out seven batters and giving up one walk. Langeliers upped his pitching record to 2-0. Willamette’s Scott Martin (Fr., RHP, Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) received the loss and dropped to 0-2 on the season.
Sean Anderson (Jr., CF, Klamath Falls, OR/Klamath Union High School) led the Bearcats with four hits in four at bats. He pounded out the only home run of the game, a solo blast to left field that tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Ellis Webster (So., 2B, Carlsbad, CA/San Dieguito HS) went 1 for 2 and scored Willamette’s final run in the fifth inning.
For George Fox, first baseman Bryan Donohue went 3 for 5 with a run and three RBIs. Daniel Downs also went 3 for 5 for the Bruins, while scoring one run and earning one RBI. Drew Johnson of GFU was 2 for 5 with two runs and three RBIs. George Fox outhit the Bearcats, 14-7.
The Bruins moved in front for good in the top of the third inning, when Drew Johnson singled to left field, stolen second and third and eventually scored on a single by Dan Wentzell. Bo Thunell scored on a balk during the inning, as George Fox took a 3-1 lead.
GFU added another run in the fourth inning. Pat Bailey doubled to right field, but Josh Burch, who was at second following a walk and a stolen base, had to hold up to see if the ball would be caught. Burch advanced only to third base despite the extra-base hit. He reached home plate when the next batter, Bryan Donohue, grounded out.
Four walks and three hits enabled George Fox to break open the game with six runs in the fifth inning. The last four runs were scored with two outs, as Johnson hit a two-RBI single to center field, which was followed by a two-RBI double from Donohue.
Langeliers’ seven strikeouts kept the Bearcats from establishing momentum through the first seven inning. Relief pitchers Brady Rhodes and Shane Dalgleish combined for three more strikeouts in the last two innings.
Martin allowed just four hits in four innings as WU’s starter, but walked three batters and gave up four
runs (three earned). Overall, six Willamette pitchers walked a total of seven Bruins, while recording just three strikeouts. Ryan Smith (Jr., RHP, Felton, CA/San Lorenzo Valley HS) provided two of the strikeouts in the ninth inning, when he faced just four batters, gave up one hit and held the Bruins scoreless.
