Ueno and Lau Earn Co-Medalist Honors at Willamette Invitational
(WOMEN'S GOLF) WOODBURN, ORE. -- Whitney Ueno (So., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) from Willamette University and Emily Lau from the University of Puget Sound tied for medalist honors with 155 strokes over 36 holes, during the Willamette Invitational, March 17-18 at the Oregon Golf Association Golf Course. Ueno, who led by seven strokes with a 72 on the first day, shot 83 on the second day. Lau shot 79 on the first day, then carded a 76 over the final 18 holes on Sunday.
Puget Sound won the team title with a score of 686. Whitworth College finished second at 714 and was followed by Pacific University in third place with a score of 720. Linfield College took fourth at 723, Willamette was fifth at 734, Pacific Lutheran University was sixth at 780 and Corban College took seventh at 903.
Ueno and Lau won by two strokes over Leslie Wheeler of Linfield, who shot 155 (79-78). Fourth place went to Krystal Pitkonen of Whitworth at 168 (85-83), while Angela Grossklaus of Pacific Lutheran shot 171 (84-87) to take fifth place. Rachel Shahbaz (Fr., Portland, OR/St. Mary's Academy) of Willamette carded a 173 (85-88) to place eighth overall.
Lau made her run an Ueno over the front nine on Sunday, shooting a 37 to tie for the lead after Ueno registered a 44 over the first nine holes. The back nine failed to break the tie, as both golfers shot a 39. The 155's earned by Ueno and Lau, plus the 157 achieved by Wheeler, were the only 36-hole scores to break 160 during the tournament.
The Bearcats return to the links on Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25 at the Pacific Invitational. The first round will be held at Quail Valley in Bend, Ore., with the second round set for Pumpkin Ridge in North Plains, Ore.
